Background and Objectives: One of the stressors in human is work environment. Individuals may be subject to professional burnout if they have no necessary skills. The purpose of the present research was to determine of the correlation between psychological empowerment and professional burnout with mediator role of perceived stress among nurses.
 
Methods: This descriptive-correlational study was performed on 254 nurses in hospitals of Rasht city, 2014. Samples were selected by random cluster sampling. The data collection tools included Maslach Burnout, Cohen Perceived Stress, and Spreitzer’s Psychological Empowerment questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient, regression analysis, and path analysis.
 
Results: The results of correlation test showed that there were significant correlation between psychological empowerment and perceived stress with professional burnout, respectively, with correlation coefficient of -0.53 and -0.67, and also between psychological empowerment and perceived stress with correlation coefficient of -0.56 (p<0.01). Regression results showed that psychological empowerment could predict 29% of professional burnout variance and 32% of perceived stress variance. The results of path analysis indicated that psychological empowerment indirectly, with the mediator role of perceived stress, could explain 54% of professional burnout variance.
 
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, psychological empowerment is effective in the reduction of perceived stress and professional burnout in nurses. Therefore, it is suggested that training courses based on increasing psychological empowerment, should be held for nurses.
