Background and Objectives: Oral health of pregnant women is important because of its effect on the mother and child’s health. Health literacy is a key determinant of oral health and related outcomes. The present study was conducted to investigate the oral health status of pregnant women in Arak, Iran and asses its relationship with their oral health literacy.
Methods: The is a descriptive-analytical study that was conducted on 275 pregnant women referring to the comprehensive health centers in Arak, Iran in 2021. The oral health literacy adults questionnaire (OHL-AQ) was used to measure their oral health literacy. A self-report tool was used to assess their oral health status. Descriptive and inferential statistics including multiple logistic regression analysis, were used to analyze the data. The significance level was set at 0.05.
Results: It was found out that only 38.5% of pregnant women had adequate oral health literacy. Adjusted regression results showed that inadequate oral health literacy was significantly related to poor oral health status; the odds of poor oral health status was 2.95 times higher in women with inadequate oral health literacy compared to those with adequate oral health literacy (95%CI, 1.10%, 7.95%, OR=2.95, P=0.03).
Conclusion: Inadequate oral health literacy is related to poor oral health status in pregnant women. In this regard, it seems necessary to plan to improve oral health literacy of pregnant women.
