Background and aims: The detrimental impact of eating disorder symptoms on academic and personal achievement among students is well documented. Furthermore, pathological mobile phone use can lead to a range of harmful effects. In the present study, it was aimed to measure the correlation between eating disorder symptoms and problematic mobile phone use in students of Birjand university of medical sciences in academic year of 2020-2021.
Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted on 354 students enrolled at Birjand University of Medical Sciences during 2020–2021. The students were selected using stratified sampling proportional to the size of each school. Data were collected using the Mobile Phone Problematic Use Scale and the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale. Data analysis was performed using independent t-test, analysis of variance, correlation coefficient, and regression analysis at a significance level of less than 0.05, using SPSS software version 18.
Results: Results revealed that there was a positive significant correlation between symptoms of eating disorder and mobile phone problematic use (p-value<0.05). Based on the regression results, a significant relationship was observed between marital status, type of residence, time management, and self-control with eating disorders.
Conclusions: Findings indicate a significant and positive correlation between pathological use of mobile phones and eating disorder symptoms. Further investigations are required to explore the correlation in more detail among university students.
