Work-life conflict refers to incompatibility between work and family roles. Establishing a balance between these work and family roles is a big challenge for nurses, especially novice nurses. Work-life conflicts include (a) time-based conflicts (the amount of time spent in one area makes it difficult to meet the needs of other area), (b) strain-based conflict (stressors in one area cause negative emotion in other area), and (c) behavior-based conflicts (behavioral patterns related to work and life are not compatible). Many nurses face with challenges of balancing work and family roles. Nurses experience more conflicts due to job conditions, including low organizational support, high number of work shifts, high workload, long working hours, etc. Novice nurses are a group of nursing community that make up about 80% of nurses. In addition to the challenges mentioned above, novice nurses face challenges such as lack of self-confidence, role conflict, lack of support. This study aims to investigate work-life conflicts in novice nurses in Birjand, Iran.
Methods
This is a qualitative study using content analysis. Participants were 13 novice nurses from teaching hospitals in Birjand city who were selected using a purposive sampling method. The data collection method was open-ended unstructured interview. Each interview lasted for 20 and 45 minutes. The interviews were conducted in a quiet place determined by the participants. The interview was started with a general question: “Please mention the work-life conflicts that you experienced when started the job”, followed by more exploratory questions based on the participants’ answers such as “Please explain more about this conflict” or “What did you mean when you said...?. The next questions were formulated based on the extracted concepts. After the 11th interview, no new concept was obtained; however, 2 more interviews were conducted to ensure data saturation. Interviews and analysis of their contents using contract analysis method were conducted simultaneously.
Results
 The age of the participants was 22-30 years; 4 were male and 9 were female; 90% were married and had a work experience between 6 months and 1 year. After analyzing the data, four main categories (Anxiety due to family problems, lack of attention to personal interests due to shift work, tension in family, and lack of attention to family due to work schedule) and 9 subcategories (Concern about childcare while working, concern about the negative impact of shift work, concern about the illness of family members while working, paying no attention to personal interests due to shift work, ignoring personal interests due to rotating shift work, misbehaving with family members, getting offended easily by family members, not doing housework due to being tired, lack of time for parenting due to working conditions) were extracted. Considering the importance of work and life as the most important aspects of every person’s life, it is necessary for  novice nurses to establish a balance between family and work responsibilities.
Discussion
Novice nurses, due to exposure to stressful conditions at the beginning of work, such as inability to perform the work independently, lack of experience and preparation for clinical work and performing tasks within the defined framework, and family responsibilities, have higher work-life conflicts. Therefore, taking measures such as creating a supportive environment for personnel and avoiding strict and inflexible work schedules can be helpful and somehow prevent the negative psychological effects and consequences of work-life conflicts in novice nurses.
