Background and purpose: During the last two decades, regional and global epidemics have occurred. Based on global experience, health systems are at the forefront of these conditions, which strengthens the health care system, and effectively dealing with these adverse conditions. The purpose of this review is to review scientific studies as well as published reports in the field of strengthening primary health care to deal with critical conditions and provide a model for Iran.
Methods: At first, a search for studies published in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest databases was conducted between 1990 and 2021 to identify related studies with suitable keywords. In the second step aimed at increasing the comprehensiveness of the research results, documents and reports published by international organizations or different health ministries were also reviewed. The quality of the articles was checked using the STROBE checklist.
Results: A total of 9 studies and 5 reports related to strengthening primary health care to deal with critical conditions were eligible to be included in the study. The collected information was categorized into four groups: a) health system boosters; b) increasing community participation in the health system and strengthening their trust in the health sector; c) Guaranteeing access to health services; and t) increasing capacity for health in the face of crises. Based on the obtained planning, primary health care requires the improvement of these four items.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of the current research, primary health care can play a greater role in dealing with various conditions. Formulation of national action with the participation of various programs from various stakeholders and actors is one of the most important things to realize this goal.
