Background and Objectives: Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease that caused by kinetoplastid protozoa of the Leishmania genus. This study aims to investigate the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of Leishmania species in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Isfahan, Iran.
Methods: Participants were 70 patients referred to the Center for Research & Training in Skin Diseases & Leprosy of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences with suspected skin lesions. The nested PCR assay was used with specific primers to identify the Leishmania species. The checklist was used to survey demographic and clinical information of the patients. The rate of healing after the treatment period was evaluated based on standard outcome in three categories: Complete healing, partial healing, and no healing. The chi square test was used to assess the difference in terms of categorical variables. P< 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: The stained smear slides of 62 patients showed positive result for Leishmania. Patients were 70.03% male and 20.96% female. Most of them were in age group of 30-39 years. The nested PCR results showed that all 62 stained slides were positive; 54(87.1%) had Leishmania major and 8(12.9%) had Leishmania tropica.
Conclusion: The L. major is the dominant Leishmania type in patients with CL in Isfahan, Iran. The identification of the characteristics of Leishmania species is important for effective treatment and disease control due to differences in the reservoir hosts.
