Introduction
In emergency situation arise when natural or man-made disasters occur. Each year, about 200 million people in the world are affected and hundreds die due to these disasters. Nearly 90% of people in Iran are exposed earthquakes and floods. The negative effects and consequences of natural disasters can remain long after the occurrence. People’s knowledge and attitude towards disasters can lead to taking appropriate health-related measures in emergency situations and help planning for education and identifying the weakness of people in the field of health information. This study aims to determine the knowledge and attitude of the students of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences (RUMS) regarding health-related measures in emergency situations
Methods
This descriptive study was conducted on 425 students of RUMS who were selected from different faculties (Nursing & Midwifery, Allied Medical Sciences, Public Health, Medicine, and Dentistry) using stratified quota sampling method in 2021. The data collection tool was a questionnaire adapted from the study by Vosoughi Nayyeri et al. If the students were present in the faculties, the questionnaire would be distributed in person; otherwise, the questionnaire was prepared in the Porsline website and its link was sent to the students to complete. After collecting the data, it they were analyzed in SPSS software, vertion 18 using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation test. The significance level was set at 0.05.
Results
The mean age of the students was 22.1±3.8 years (ranged 18-54 years), and 84.7% were single. 32.9% (n=140) were PhD students, 5.9% (n=25) were graduate students, 58.8% (n=250) were undergraduate students, and 2.4% (n=10) were associate students. The mean score of students’ knowledge and attitude towards health measures in emergency situations was 5.2±1.6 (out of 10) and 34.9±2.9 (out of 50), respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in knowledge (P=0.747) and attitude (P=0.242) scores of male and female students, and in knowledge (P=0.825) and attitude (P=0.684) scores of single and married students. Based on one-way ANOVA results, the knowledge score (F=1.400, P=0.170) and attitude score (F=0.540, P=0.876) of students in different fields of study were not significantly different. There was no significant difference in knowledge (F=1.064, P=0.364) and attitude (F=2.076, P=0.103) among students with different educational levels. However, there was a significant correlation between students’ knowledge and age (r=0.114, P<0.01) and between their attitude and age (r=0.146, P<0.01) such that with the increase of age, their knowledge and attitude increased.
Discussion
The RUMS students’ knowledge and attitude about health measures in emergency situations are at a moderate level.  Educational courses using pamphlets and brochures can be held to improve their knowledge and attitude. The provision of educational materials for students on social media as well as inter-departmental collaboration of RUMS with related organizations, such as the Red Crescent Organization, are also recommended.
