Background and Objectives Misbehavior towards the elderly is one of the important and growing issues in different countries and is a multifactorial phenomenon. Identifying risk factors helps prevent violence. Elder abuse is a major public health problem that leads to serious health consequences for victims, there are conflicts in previous studies in the field of elder abuse that seem to be caused by culture, so by conducting this study and integrating various studies conducted in Iran It is possible to resolve the conflicts and identify the gender differences.
Methods: The current study is a systematic review that was compiled in 2022 according to the Prisma guideline, with the research question: What are the gender differences of elder abuse in Iran? In this study, 27 articles on elder abuse in Iran from 2002 to 2022 were collected from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, SID, Maghiran and Google Scholar search engine, then analyzed. The strobe tool was used to check the quality of the articles.
Results: In this review, 265 articles were extracted and finally 27 studies were reviewed. According to the results of this study, elder abuse in elderly Iranian women is more common than men, and the prevalence of elder abuse in all its types except financial abuse was higher in women. In many studies, the most important risk factors that were investigated and were significant include: age, sex, marital status, level of education, economic status and income, living arrangements, place of living, being treated for depression, dependence on others in performing daily ADL tasks, health and oral hygiene status, substance abuse, chronic illness, number of children, insurance status.
Conclusion: physical, psycho-emotional abuse, self-neglect, rejection was more common in women and financial abuse in men. In many studies, the most important and significant risk factors were investigated, including: female gender, increasing age, low income, living alone and low education. It is recommended to conduct a cross-sectional study in relation to the investigation of the gender differences, which includes the prevalence and predictors of elder abuse by gender in the elderly and caregivers, in order to accurately identify people at risk and prevent this great social problem.
