Objective (s): Fertility reduction in recent years has become a significant demographic issue in the country. Understanding the factors contributing to this decline can enhance population planning efforts. This study aimed to explore the relationship between sexual health literacy and childbearing among married women of reproductive age in Shiraz.
Methods: The present quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted in Shiraz using multi-stage, systematic random sampling and a standard questionnaire. A total of 384 women aged 15 to 49 in Shiraz were surveyed in 1403. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 27.
Results: The average age of the women was 35.7 years. Among them, 50.8% had a university education, 61.5% were housewives, 74.5% spoke Farsi, and 50% identified as middle class. Additionally, 46.9% of the women had high sexual health literacy. Linear regression analysis revealed that an increase in sexual health literacy (with a beta of -0.004) led to a significant decrease (P = 0.008) in the number of children born.
Conclusion: A portion of the fertility decline in Iran can be attributed to the rise in health literacy, particularly women's sexual health literacy. Although increased sexual health literacy was associated with a significant decrease in childbearing, it can also contribute to improving women's overall health. Women with higher sexual health literacy are better able to plan for childbirth and have the desired number of children at the right time.
