Abstract
Background and Objectives: Psoriasis is a chronic and inflammatory skin disease, which is having no definitive cure. Several microbial agents have been identified in the exacerbation of psoriasis, one of the most important of which is the Staphylococcus aureus. Increased methicillin resistance in S. aureus strains is a major problem worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oil on methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) isolated from skin lesions in patients with psoriasis.
Methods:  In this study, 140 patients with psoriasis referred to the dermatology and rheumatology clinic of Shariati Hospital in Tehran were studied. Diagnostic tests including gram staining, catalase, coagulase, mannitol fermentation and DNase tests were performed. To identify the phenotype of MRSA strains, methicillin susceptibility testing was performed using disk cefoxitin by disk diffusion method. The antimicrobial activity of C. zeylanicum essential oil was investigated by broth microdilution method on MRSA strains and its minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was obtained.
Results: The results showed that out of 140 patients, 43.57% of patients with S. aureus and 14.28% of these patients were infected with MRSA. There was no significant relationship between gender, age and sampling location of MRSA carriers. The results showed that C. zeylanicum essential oil has an antimicrobial effect on MRSA strains
Conclusion: The essential oil of C. zeylanicum can be a suitable alternative to antibiotics as part of the drug formulation in the control and treatment of skin infections caused by this bacterium.
