Introduction:Vaspin is a novel adipocytokine. Various studies have shown vaspin is associated with many types of cancer. This study aims to determine the association of vaspin rs2236242 gene polymorphism and vaspin level with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), and Multinodular goiter (MNG). Materials and Methods:This case-control study involved 134 women. The participants were divided into three groups; PTC 49 patients, MNG 30 patients and 55 participants as a control group. Ten milliliters of peripheral blood were taken from participants, 5ml of blood used for DNA extraction and 5 ml for preparation of serum. The measurements of vaspin hormone were performed by Sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kitZellBio, (Germany). The genotype determination of vaspin rs2236242 polymorphism was performed using the tetra-amplification refractory mutation system Polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS-PCR). Results:There were no significant differences in serum vaspin concentrations in the three groups. The findings indicated that there was no significant association between genotypes of vaspin rs2236242 gene polymorphism and serum vaspin levels in PTC, MNG and control(P-value≥0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed the genotype frequencies of the vaspin rs2236242 polymorphism in the MNG groups was significant compared to the control group(P-value>0.05). The TA genotype vaspin rs2236242 showed a protective effect in patients with PTC and MNG (P-value > 0.05). Conclusion:Our results demonstrated that there was no significant difference invaspin levels between groups (PTC, MNG and control). There is no association between rs2236242 gene polymorphism and serum vaspin levels. The TA genotype of rs2236242 has a protective effect in patients with MNG.
