Coping strategies of the family of critically ill trauma patients during the days of the patient's hospitalization: qualitative content analysis study
Abstract
Background and purpose: trauma is an unforeseen incident with various physical and psychological consequences for the individual and his family, the family as the main caregiver is under heavy physical and mental pressure and it leads to the emergence of behaviors that are the result of psychological pressure during hospitalization days. The aim of this study was to explain the coping strategies of the families of critical trauma patients during the days of the patient's hospitalization.
Research method: The current research was conducted with the approach of contractual content analysis in 2022 on the family members of patients hospitalized in the trauma departments of Qom hospitals in Iran. 18 family members of the patients were selected in a purposeful way, data were collected using in-depth and individual semi-structured interviews, and data analysis was done using Zhang-Widelmuth's qualitative content analysis model.
Result: The results of the data analysis of 18 participating family members of trauma patients led to the extraction of two main classes as non-constructive coping strategies with five subclasses and constructive coping strategies with five subclasses.
Conclusion: The families of critically ill trauma patients perform constructive and non-constructive coping strategies during the days of their patient's hospitalization in order to adapt to the conditions encountered. Strengthening constructive and positive strategies by nurses and helping to correct negative non-constructive strategies can help in managing the mental-psychological condition of themselves and other family members during the sick days of their patients.
