Background and Objectives: Nosocomial infections refer to healthcare-associated infections that are infections acquired during the process of receiving health care that was not present during the time of admission. This study aims to determine the prevalence of nosocomial infections and related factors in hospitals of Qom City, Iran.
Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was conducted on 112,316 patients from eight hospitals in Qom City in 2018. Data were collected using a hospital infection monitoring checklist and according to the national nosocomial infections surveillance system of Iran.
Results: The prevalence of nosocomial infections in patients hospitalized in the hospitals of Qom City was 0.8%. The highest and lowest cases of nosocomial infections were reported in Shahid Beheshti Hospital and Hazrat-e Masoumeh Hospital, respectively. The highest and lowest prevalence of nosocomial infections were reported in neonatal intensive care units (11%) and pediatric intensive care units (1.1%), respectively. In this study, the urinary tract infection with 29.1% was the most common nosocomial infection type. The most common type of nosocomial infection in hospitalized patients was urinary tract infection (27.7%) and the least common type was surgical site infection (8.3%). Also, Acinetobacter and Escherichia coli were the highest bacterial strains in infections (13.3 and 15.6).
Conclusion: The prevalence of nosocomial infections in hospitals of Qom City is 0.8%. To control and prevent nosocomial infections, it is necessary to improve the screening and care systems for these infections and increase the awareness and practice of the treatment staff.
