Development and psychometric evaluation of the scale of preparation of emergency nurses in the care of trauma patients
  Abstract
Introduction: The level of preparation of nurses in performing correct, timely and appropriate actions plays an important role in saving trauma patients. Examining the level of preparation of nurses requires a valid and specific tool.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to design and psychometrically assess the level of preparation of emergency nurses in the care of trauma patients.
Methodology: This psychometric study was conducted in 2022. In order to develop the items, a review of emergency texts published in Farsi and English was done. After extracting the items from the texts after several reviews by the research team, the initial scale with 67 items was developed. The psychometric process including validity (form, content and structure), reliability (internal consistency, test-retest) was done.
Results: An initial scale of 67 items was developed in four areas of triage with 2 items, evaluation and primary care with 38 items, evaluation and secondary care with 15 items, and preparation for caring for patients with special conditions with 10 items. Two items in face validity and two items in content validity were removed. Exploratory factor analysis led to the emergence of 4 factors with a total of 50/70 variance. The reliability of Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the whole instrument was 0.923 (p-0.001) and intra-cluster correlation was confirmed as 0.93.
Conclusion: The scale of the level of preparation of emergency nurses in the care of trauma patients has acceptable validity and reliability to check the level of preparation of nurses in the care of trauma patients in emergency departments.
