Background and Objectives: Dysmenorrheal is one of the prevalent complaints of women which is caused by prostaglandin release and treated with chemical drugs. Today regarding the side effects of these drugs, scientists are increasingly moving towards using herbal drugs. The present study aimed at comparing the effect of supermint and Ibuprofen on primary dysmenorrheal.

Methods: This This was a clinical trial study in which100 girl medical students in Ahvaz aging between 18-22 years old who complained of dysmenorrheal and whose pain was moderate or severe participated. A total of 50 cases were excluded from the study. Verbal multi dimensional scoring, questionnaire and check list were used for gathering data. In the first cycle no medication was given (control cycle). Then they were divided into two groups: 1) 50 cases took 400mg Ibuprofen tablets every four hours if needed and 2) 50 cases were treated by supermint orally (40 drops every four hours). They used these treatments for two cycles at the beginning of each cycle. Statistical analysis was performed using the independent sample T-test, paired T-test, Mann- Whitney and Chi- square tests.

Results: This study showed that in each group pain severity mean of primary dysmenorrheal prior to treatment was significantly decreased (p=0.0001). But the rate of pain decrease between the two groups showed no significant difference (p=0.486).

Conclusion: Regarding the results of this study, it seems that both supermint and Ibuprofen decrease pain at the same level which seems to be due to supermint, santiprostaglandin and antispasmodic effects. Therefore, supermint can be used as a safe and effective herbal drug for primary dysmenorrheal.
