Background and Objectives: Conventional teaching methods such as lecture method, are not effective for learning theoretical courses and new methods should be used for teaching. This study aims to determine female medical students’ learning and satisfaction with teaching applied ethics course by multimedia and conventional methods.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study (with pre-test/post-test design) on 121 female medical students from Hamadan University of Medical Sciences who took the applied ethics course in 2022-2023. They were randomly divided into two groups of intervention and control. The teaching method in the control group was the lecture method, while the intervention group received education by the multimedia method. The educational content and slides, the lecturer presenting the courses, and the number of sessions were the same in both groups. The research tools included a 15-item learning scale and a 17-item satisfaction scale (for the intervention group). The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and tests in STATA software, version 14.
Results: The mean learning score in the intervention group was 4.01 points higher than in the control group and this difference was statistically significant (t=-9.35, P<0.001). The overall satisfaction score was 3.58±0.23 (out of 5). The percentage of students in the intervention group who were satisfied in the areas of course content, presented assignments, and produced content were 68.10%, 33.33%, and 79.31%, respectively.
Conclusion: Professors are recommended to use the multimedia method for better and more effective learning of applied ethics and other theoretical courses.
