Background and Objectives: Older people suffer from many problems and chronic diseases. To maintain their health, they should be able to take care of themselves. Spiritual well-being and self-efficacy are important dimensions of health and an important aspect of the life in the elderly. The present study aims to determine the relationship between spiritual well-being and self-efficacy in older people with chronic diseases in Babol, north of Iran.
Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was conducted on 225 older people referred to three urban and one rural comprehensive health centers of Babol City in 2023 using a convenience sampling method. Data were collected using Paloutzian & Craig’s spiritual well-being health questionnaire (SWB) and generalized self-efficacy scale (GSES). Data analysis was done using descriptive and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation test, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, regression analysis) in SPSS software, version 20.
Results: The mean scores of spiritual well-being (109.98±12.58) and self-efficacy (78.4±7.46) were favorable. Spiritual well-being had a positive and significant correlation with self-efficacy (r=0.973, P<0.001); i.e. with the increase of spiritual well-being in older adults, their self-efficacy increases. Based on the regression analysis results, spiritual well-being could predict 94.7% of the variance in self-efficacy (P<0.001, β=0.97).
Conclusion: The increase in spiritual well-being of older adults can improve their self-efficacy. The results of this study can be useful for policymakers in Iran in the field of geriatric health.
