Background and Objectives: With the outbreak of COVID-19 and the closure of universities and schools, online education was used to continue the education process, which is very different from face-to-face education. This study aims to measure academic motivation and academic satisfaction of nursing students at Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences (AJUMS) in Iran during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 167 nursing students of AJUMS participated. The data collection tools included a demographic form, the academic satisfaction scale, and McInerney’s inventory of school motivation (ISM). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation test and simple linear regression analysis in SPSS software, version 22.
Results: A significant and positive correlation between academic satisfaction and academic motivation was reported (r=0.511, P<0.001). Regression models showed that academic motivation (β=0.511, P<0.001) was the predictor of academic satisfaction in nursing students. This factor was able to predict 25% of the changes in the academic satisfaction.
Conclusion: The AJUMS nursing students had moderate academic satisfaction and academic motivation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nursing education managers should design and implement new and effective educational programs to eliminate educational deficiencies and improve the academic motivation and satisfaction of nursing students.
