Introduction
The main goal of the health system is to provide safe and quality patient care. The patients have special rights compared to the healthcare providers due to their illness and weakness. The government and the health system must provide the necessary resources and facilities to support hospitalized patients in different aspects. Considering the complexity of the treatment processes and increasing complaints of patients about the violation of their rights in Iran, this study aims to identify the components of protecting the rights of patients in hospitals of Iran.
Methods
This is a qualitative study using the inductive content analysis method. After studying the literature and identifying and extracting the components, semi-structured interview questions were designed, and five professors confirmed their face validity. Sampling was done by purposive and snowball method for considering maximum diversity. The participants included 16 experts in the fields of patient rights in hospitals. Interviews were conducted until data saturation. The content analysis was done in MAXQDA software, version 10.
Results
To identify the components of protecting the rights of service recipients in a hospital, seven themes were extracted, including policy-making (with 17 sub-themes), management (with 10 sub-themes), education (with 7 sub-themes), informing (with 4 sub-themes), human resources (with 7 sub-themes), physical resources (with 5 sub-themes) and patient-centered (with 10 sub-themes). The most important theme was policy-making (28%), followed by management and patient-centered themes (17%).
Conclusion
The findings of this research showed that the components of protecting the rights of service recipients in Iranian hospitals included seven themes (policy-making, managerial, educational, informational, human resources, physical resources and patient-oriented) and 60 sub-themes.
The Iranian government, at the macro level, should take the necessary measures to protect the rights of patients and their families in hospitals by developing appropriate policies. Hospitals should also provide the required resources for this purpose. The results of this research can be useful for the officials of the Ministry of Health, medical universities, insurance organizations and hospitals in Iran.
