Background and Objectives: This study examined the effectiveness of Raha syrup on the drug craving and changes in serum cortisol levels in patients with opioid use disorder receiving the opium tincture (OT) maintenance treatment. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study. Two groups of patients who were physically dependent on opiate and had actively used opiate for 4 to 6 years before the study were studied. Sixty-two patients-volunteers were interviewed and divided into two groups: 30 patients received OT, and 32 patients received OT+Raha syrup. Both groups completed the drug craving questionnaire (DDQ) before and after the treatment. Venous blood samples were taken from patients after 8 hours of fasting before and after the treatment to measure serum cortisol levels. Results: Our findings have been shown that the drug craving decreased after the intervention in both groups. The reduction of the drug craving in the patients receiving Raha syrup was significantly higher than those receiving only OT. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in serum cortisol levels after the intervention between the two groups. Conclusion: Our findings showed that maintenance treatment with OT along with Raha herbal syrup can be useful for reducing the drug craving in opiate addicts during the abstinence period. Therefore, the simultaneous use of Raha syrup with OT may be beneficial for the management of opiate abstinence, as a therapeutic strategy.
